News from Rome

Sister Angella Mutisya works in Propaganda Fide in Rome. There is an annual international meeting of the national co-ordinators of the Pontifical Mission Society. At this meeting they have an audience with Pope Francis.

An International group of the Sisters of Mercy visited Rome for the Year of Mercy. The Sisters in Mater Dei hosted an Irish tea party!

The relationship between the Mercy Sisters and the Poor Servants of the Mother of God goes back to the time of our Foundress Frances Taylor and the Crimean War.

The Sisters visited the room used by Mother Magdalen when she lived in Rome.

News from Ireland

In April the contracts for our building project in Chapelizod were signed by Sr. Mary Whelan and Purcell Construction Ltd. We wish all concerned every success.


News from Kenya

World Environment Day Mombasa 4 June 2016

Sister Anna Mwangangi and AOSK (Association of Sisters in Kenya) companions plant a tree in Mombasa to mark World Environmental Day in June 2016.

News from UK

On the 21st June our senior Sisters from Brentford, Middlesex and St. Mary’s Roehampton gathered in Maryfield for an afternoon tea and entertainment. The SMG Kenyan Sisters entertained us with song and dance. 


Sadly we have said good-bye to the following Sisters over the past few months:

Sr. Hubert Foley died on 30th January.

Sr. Hubert was born on 18 April 1918 in Dirragh, Co. Kerry; worked in secondary education in Ireland for most of her life.

Sr. Dominic Fitzgerald died on 3rd February.

Sr. Dominic was born on 3 August 1925 in Sutton Oak; worked in the United Kingdom in child care. Dominic trained as an artist before she became an SMG.

Sr. Madeleine Ryan died on 17th April.

Sr. Madeleine was born on 4 November 1953 in in St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. She worked in education in Ireland and Kenya where she was responsible for formation. She was a member of the general leadership team at the time of her sudden death.

Sr. Gregory Delaney died on 19th April.

Sr. Gregory was born on 31 October 1917. She worked in the UK, Rome and Ireland and spent many years as a local leader. She is survived by her sister Maureen who is also an SMG

Sr. Ignatius Barron died on 26 May.

Sr. Ignatius was born on 5 January 1926 in Waterford. She worked as a nurse in the UK and Kenya. Ignatius was our pioneer Sister in Kenya. In latter years she was a Parish sister in Liverpool.

Sr. Teresa Murphy died on 16 June.

Sr. Teresa was born on 19 September 1919. She worked in the UK and Ireland. She was part of the staff in our boarding schools for many years and later became a very active member of the Parish in Castledermot. She was a gifted musician.

Sr. Hilda Cunnane died on 23 June.

Sr. Hilda was born on 1 November 1923. Hilda worked in social services in the UK, mostly with women who had special needs. She did Parish ministry in Chippenham, Wiltshire for many years before she retired.
