October - the month of the Holy Rosary
The month of October brings to mind the feasts of the Holy Rosary, St Teresa of Avila, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Patroness of the Missions, and St. John Henry Newman. All these feasts have a meaning for us. Most of us learnt how to say the Rosary at a very young age and have continued its practice ever since. St. Therese holds a special place in our hearts by the practice of her ‘Little Way.’ St. Teresa of Avila was the first woman to be named a Doctor of the Church. We recall that St. John Henry Newman was an inspiration to Venerable Mother Magdalen in the early days of the Congregation. It is a month when we renew our devotion to the Rosary and pray for all our Sisters on mission in our world today.
October for each one of us has its own meaning. We could see it as the culmination of autumn, when the trees finally yield up their leaves in preparation for a new spring when the cycle of life starts all over again.
During October let us pause to allow the falling leaves to remind us of the call to be vulnerable, the call to be open to the possibility of being hurt, the call to grow from the daily dying of our days and to love as Jesus loved.
