Congratulations to our Centenarian, Sr Lua Griffin!
One of our longest-serving SMGs, who entered the Congregation in 1944 (a phenomenal 81 years ago!), recently celebrated her centenary birthday. On reaching 100 years of age, Sr Lua Griffin became a member of the very exclusive group of remarkable people, a group comprising less than half a per cent of Ireland's population! She is witness to World War II, the moon landings, Vatican II, supersonic flight, the unravelling of the human genome, the genesis of the World Wide Web, the rise of artificial intelligence and many, many more fascinating (and often disturbing) events and developments in our history.
She is the last surviving member of a family of twelve – four girls and eight boys.
On her 100th birthday, Sr Lua received a letter from former President Michael D. Higgins, congratulating her on her longevity, together with a generous cheque to mark the achievement. The staff and residents of the nursing home in which Sr Lua resides arranged a lovely birthday party for her, which she thoroughly enjoyed. A few days later, a special Thanksgiving Mass in her honour was celebrated. This was followed by a sumptuous meal at the Marine Hotel and attended by SMG Sisters and members of the Griffin family.
Sr. Lua thoroughly enjoyed all the celebrations and is very grateful for the many Masses, gifts and good wishes she received from near and far. Our congratulations once again to a very special lady; may God keep her safe in His loving embrace and bless her with continued good health and happiness for years to come.
