Death of beloved Sr Genevieve Devenny SMG, aged 99 years. RIP

For almost a century, Sr Genevieve lived a life of quiet service, deep faith and generous love. We remember her not only for what she did, but for who she was – a devoted Sister, a gifted teacher, a compassionate caregiver and a faithful disciple of Christ.

Sr Genevieve’s decision to leave behind a promising career in banking and enter religious life was a testament to her willingness to follow God’s call wherever it led. It was a vocation she embraced with joy and fidelity for more than seventy years, entering the Noviciate in Maryfield, Roehampton in 1951.

Following teacher training in Digby Stuart College she taught in many of our schools. Those who were taught by Sr. Genevieve remember not only her ability in the classroom but the warmth and encouragement she brought to her pupils. Her beautiful singing voice enriched school liturgies and celebrations, helping many young people to grow in their faith.

On retirement from teaching, Sr Genevieve worked with special needs women in our various care homes, which her gentle, relaxed personality was well-suited to. She was also a visitor to Brixton Prison where she helped with the chaplaincy and interacted with the prisoners. Her work was very much appreciated, and she was presented with the Governor's Commendation in recognition of her dedicated work as a volunteer over many years.

We give thanks for her witness of faith, her kindness, her humility and her unwavering trust in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, living out the words of her motto, Cor Jesu, in Te Confido (Heart of Jesus, in You I Trust). May she now hear the words every faithful servant longs to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May she rest in the peace and joy of God’s eternal kingdom.
